Charlotte Bronte was an incredible person, who over the course of her life encountered and overcame many different trials and tribulations. A majority of real life events from Bronte’s childhood and adult life are portrayed In her famous work, Jane Eyre. Some say her novel is so closely related to the author’s actual life, that it could be considered an autobiography. Over the storyline of Jane Eyre, Bronte depicts many aspects of the life she lived; from her childhood, to her work, to her lovelife. Charlotte was born in 1816, the third child of six born to Reverend Patrick and Maria Bronte, in Thornton, Yorkshire. After the passing of her mother when she was five, Bronte and her five siblings were left under the care of their poor father. Maria’s sister, Elizabeth Branwell, also came to live with the Bronte family and to help Patrick care for the children. Due to the business of their father, the Bronte children were practically raised by their aunt whom they characterized as callous and uncaring. She viewed governessing as a type of bondage and form of servitude to the wealthy. Although, she did not have much of a choice as teaching and governessing were practically the only two professions available for a woman of her background. Charlotte and her sisters would later open their own school in attempt to provide a job that would let them maintain their freedom, but it was a failure as they did not attract one student. There are undoubtedly ties between the employment experiences of Bronte and her heroine Jane Eyre. Both served as teachers, governesses, and attempted to run their own schools.
