A Room With a View focuses on the class warfare, and social mores of the 20th century England. Unlike England with strict social morals, Italy is portrayed as the liberal. The main character, Lucy, and her companion, Charlotte, are bound by the conventions of their class were taught proper morals, as George lived freely and carefree of many things. In the novel Lucy struggles between the old fashioned views of her cousin and the most liberal views of the worldly people she had met abroad and at home in England. She is also torn between the voice of her cousin Charlotte telling her to act appropriately and to do what is expected of her and the voice of the Emersons telling her to follow her heart and explore life.

Charlotte represents the repressive Victorian society that holds Lucy back with rules even though she is on holiday in Italy and country that represents romance, freedom, and adventure. It is hinted in some parts of the first couple chapters that she experienced a love affair around Lucy’s age and that’s why she’s all over her. She pushed Lucy away from George saying they shouldn’t be together. But later on in the book, she talks to Mr. Emerson who says that Lucy really does love and “ we fight for more than love or pleasure; there is truth. Lucy wants to ride on the Train but she is unable to t because it was improper for women to do in this time period. Charlotte is quoted “ ladies were inferior to men, and that they are to inspire others to achievement rather than to achieve themselves.” Lucy agrees with Charlotte knowing that can't is possible why they can’t ride even though she doesn’t like it. This novel features strong women characters and in a way shows that women are equal to men. Lucy sees that in the book and sides that women don’t need to be independent completely of men but have free will and be able to speak their mind like forester
