Charlotte A. Deney’s Personal Statement for the STEM Ambassador Program Who is Charlotte Deney? The truth is simple; I am not perfect but I am me. I try my hardest to achieve my goals and stay motivated; honestly, I am only human and that is ok. My path has never been a clear one; the path has always been rocky and has even come to a dead end at times. Throughout those difficult times, I have always persevered and that is what is important. Adults start asking children when they have barely begun preschool, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I did not have an answer to that question until I was twenty-one years old. When I was young and people would ask me that question, I would always say a chef, or a ballerina, or something in the arts. I truly loved the arts, but I had this underlying feeling that I needed to be in some type of human service field or I personally would not feel accomplished in life. There was a professor at my community college, who peaked my interest in psychology. After taking psychology and loving it so much, I wanted to know more about how the brain worked on a molecular level; this lead to interests in biology and chemistry. Once on the molecular level, I started exploring other organ systems. Eventually, I realized medicine was where I wanted to be. There is nothing more intriguing or satisfying than being able to understand how the body works and helping those who’s bodies are not working properly. The feeling of human service is indescribable. My motivation stems from desire, a desire to help humanity. I read an article written by a medical student that said when she realized she was no longer studying to make the grade, but she was studying to save someone’s life, her outlook changed. A single line in an article completely changed my thought process. That quote is my sole motivation; work hard now and save lives
