Florence Kelley was a famous Progressive-Era social reformer known for her protective legislation on working women and children. From a young age, she committed herself to social reform like at Hull House in Chicago and also as the first general secretary of the National Consumers League. She later helped start National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) who policy was “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” The famous case of Muller V. Oregon showed Florence’s conquest to establish labor laws against working long hours and bad working conditions. This case paved a way into new ideas and eventually created the labor unions we have today Florence’s father, Congressman William Kelley, was a social activist who fought for the poor.
Women are viewed as fragile and delicate, but strong enough to keep a house clean, kids in line and a happy husband. Women are expected to be stay at home moms and depend on their husbands for everything while having no opinions of their own. However, there are women who have overlooked those expectations and proved that women are capable of doing anything. Deborah Sampson and Elizabeth Van Lew are just two women who have helped break the norms of women’s roles in society. Sampson’s impressive braveness and loyalty to fight for her country against all odds have proved that women are capable to endure harsh horrors.
There are multiple times in Bobbie Ann Mason's short story "Shiloh" in which gender stereotypes are altered and subverted. Leroy and Norma Jean, a married couple, are the central figures of "Shiloh." Leroy, who served in the military and personifies the usual expectations of a husband as a provider and protector, exemplifies the traditional masculine role. However, Leroy is no longer able to work as a result of a trucking accident, and he is forced to stay at home while Norma Jean works outside the house. The stereotype that men are the breadwinners and women are the homemakers is called into question by this gender role reversal.
Living in colonial Virginia ascribed itself to be like living in a lawless land. Far from England and its traditions, a vacuum existed in Virginia that left gender, race, and power undefined. Many scrambled to fill its void, but it would take time before societal norms would be laid down. The women of the colony were most necessary in establishing the patriarchal society that would transform again into one of paternalism. A woman’s power in colonial Virginia depended entirely upon her race.
Jane Austen author of the novel Pride and Prejudice provokes readers to ponder marriage. She incorporates two proposals that represent conflicting motives. She first uses Mr. Collins character to express the social expectation held by society to marry. His character reveals the impact society has on the decisions we make. While on the other hand, Mr. Darcy’s character emphasizes falling in love and establishing a true connection.
Racism and sexism are the root causes of the Lee family´s dysfunction because when James became his introductory history course about cowboys, he feels racially, marginalized, and excluded from American culture. Sexism is one of the causes why Marilyn didn´t become a doctor. Back in Middlewood, James takes Nath to the Y, where Nath experienced bullying and humiliation by the other neighborhood children in the pool. James a fourth year graduate student performed a new course called “The Cowboy in American Culture”, where Marilyn took that course.
American women in the late 1800’s received unequal treatment, even more so than in today’s society. Not only were they treated unfairly, they could not even vote until 1920. Moreover, they were unable to obtain certain jobs, and if they did get a job it was from the home. Furthermore, women had little to no say in their decisions. They often had their husbands either picked for them, or mutually agreed upon.

Charlotte Lucas is a character that believes happiness is not a necessity as long as she is financially stable. Similarly, Jane Bennet is practical about her economic state while still recognizing the value of true love. In contrast, Lydia Bennet is young, immature and blinded by the idea of being admired.

In this love story they have to overcome many obstacles just as any normal couple would. Elizabeth has pride that makes her miss judge Darcy on their first time meeting, but Darcy’s prejudice which makes him misjudge Elizabeth because of her poor society standings.
Marriage was their main goal in their life, much like that of the Bennet family. These social constructs were buried deep into the lives of many men and women, and most women abided firmly to these rules, many with pride. From reading Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice however, it is clear that Austen was one of the few women of this time, who did not wish to condone these rules of a patriarchal society.
