Author Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who is considered to one of the Great American authors, who wrote during the Realism time period. Particularly, in her work titled “Women and Economics”, written in 1898 we can see evidence of the characteristics, themes and style identified with the Realist Movement which was extant in American letters between the 1850s and 1900s. As a representative of such a movement, Charlotte Perkins Gilman then remains as one of the most identifiable and iconic writers of her time. She had a difficult childhood when she was growing up. Her father, Fredrick Beecher Perkins was relative of well-known and influential Beecher family, which is including the writer Harriet Beecher Stowe. But her father had abandoned her family, leaving Charlottes mother to raise two children on her own and by herself. Charlotte moved around a lot as a result and her education suffered greatly for it. Gilman married artist Charles Stetson in 1884. The couple had a daughter named Katherine. Sometimes during the decade-long marriage to Stetson, Gilman had experienced a severe depression and had undergone a series of unusual treatments for it. From this experience it is believed that she was inspired to create her best known short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” and published in 1892. While she was best known for her fiction, Charlotte was also a successful lecturer and intellectual. One of her greatest works of nonfiction, Women and Economics, was published in 1998. As a feminist, she called for women to gain economic independence, and her work helped cement her standing as a social theorist. Other important nonfiction works that followed were, The Home: Its Work and Influence, which was published
