Chemical Reaction Of Alka-Seltzer In Water

According to our data table, we made an observation that a chemical reaction occurred as we dropped alka-seltzer in the water. Alka-seltzer tablet fizzed furiously when dropped in the water. The tablet started disappearing in the water, a chemical reaction occurred and carbon dioxide gas released during this process. As we put the tablet in the water it fizzed and looked like carbonated in the water. This is what comprises the bubbles. After tablet get disappeared in the water, the bubbles created by the chemical reaction stopped and now our container gets all cool to touch. Some people think how and why this happens "As the tablet vanishes in the water, the sodium bicarbonate splits apart to form sodium and bicarbonate ions that react with hydrogen ions from citric acid to form carbon dioxide gas."(carbonation countdown: the effect of temperature on reaction time). When the whole tablet get …show more content…

"According to the law of conservation of mass, if a chemical reaction occurs in a closed system, there should be no difference in the mass."(www.chem.wisc.edu). We had 100 ml of water in container and it weighs 119.2g and the total mass within the cap, paper and the tablet was 121.95g. We put the tablet in the water and tightly capped the bottle filled with water. When tablet get disappeared in the water, the bottle became pressurized and got expanded. Furthermore, we uncapped the bottle and waited for some seconds then put the cap again on it.Then we measured mass again, it was almost as same as before. The mass we measured after the whole process came up, was 121.80g. The chemical reaction happened between the water and the tablet conserves the mass of the water. As a whole point, we claimed that there was a chemical reaction between the water and the tablet that produced carbon dioxide and the mass remained as same as before and after the
