Factors that affect chemical reactions Intro: this experiment is to show us what factors affect the rate of a chemical reaction. Supplies: The Works Liquid Toilet Bowl Cleaner, TUMS antiacid tablets, a non-serrated knife, a spoon, a stirring rod, four test tubes, flame heater, a small beaker for the boiled water, rubber gloves, and safety goggles. Procedure: we filled a beaker 3/4 of the way full with tap water and brought the water to a boil. We then labeled our test tubes 1,2,3,4. We filled test tubes 1,2, and 3 half way full with toilet bowl cleaner. We then put the tubes into the test tube holder. In test tube number 4 we filled approximately 1/8 of the way full with toilet bowl cleaner and the filled it with water until it was 1/2 full. …show more content…

We took one of the quarter pieces and ground it up with a spoon. We put test tube number 3 into the boiling water, so that the toilet bowl cleaner becomes hot. Next, we put one of the quarter antacid tablets into tubes 1,3,4. We took the powdered tablet and put it into tube 3. Observations: Test tube 1: small reaction happened, it became foamy and rose around a quarter inch full with bubbles. Test tube 2:medium reaction, foam rose faster than Test tube 1- the foam reaches to the top of the tube and spilled out a little. Test tube 3: very big reaction, foam began spilling out of the Test tube almost immediately once the powdered table made contact with the toilet bowl cleaner. Test tube 4: basically nothing happened, a few bubbles were formed. 5 minutes later.... Test tube 1: sky blue colored, anti acid table didn't dissolve all the way. Foam dissipated slightly Test tube 2:sky blue colored, foam dissipated a little. All the antacid tablet was dissolved. Test tube 3: cloudy, gray-blue colored. Foam had completely settled. The whole antacid tablet was dissolved Test tube 4: very light blue, almost clear colored. No reaction happened, antacid tablet was almost completely
