4.1.5 Cheswick Cheswick’s face always shows the sign of anxiety and worry. His forehead is wrinkling; he inhales a lot, and most of the time he looks as if he is going to cry. Many times, Cheswick stands for Harding and helps him when he is arguing, although Harding always refuses to be helped. Cheswick is one of the patients who stay there voluntarily. Although he stays in the psychiatric ward, Cheswick has no problems in terms of communicating with others, especially McMurphy. However, his worry and anxiousness take over his communicative personality most of the time. Cheswick has a hard time controlling his anxiousness. He is also a flat and dynamic character. The second evidence is the lobotomy practice that is done towards McMurphy at the end of the movie. After McMurphy’s failed attempt to run away and kill Nurse Ratched by choking her, he is taken away one more time and gets separated from the other patients. He goes back several days later being a totally different person. When Chief Bromden approaches him, he saw the mark on McMurphy’s head showing the sign of lobotomy. An article by Long (2010) stated that lobotomy was first performed in Lisbon in 1935. Lobotomy was performed by drilling two holes in the patients’ skulls, and the doctor would insert pure alcohol to destroy the brain’s tissue or surgically destroy the nerves that connect parts of the brain. Lobotomy was believed to be able to cure mental illness. However, because of its huge amount of failures and protests, many stopped performing lobotomies since it was considered barbaric. However, United States was among the countries that still performed lobotomies until the 1980s. The second evidence and fact show that the movie was done before the 1980s because of the lobotomy practice towards McMurphy. As a conclusion, although the time is not clearly stated in the movie, the evidence shows the time range that might show the period when the movie takes place. From the medical technology, the chance is that the movie takes the setting before the 1980s, but not way before, probably around
