As I opened the door for the Chicano Student Center, at the University of California Riverside, I did not know what to expect. The feeling of a thousand butterflies, fluttering in my stomach, my palms so sweaty, it was if I had dipped them in water. A couple of days before I had emailed the director of the program, Estella Acuña, hoping to schedule an interview with her to acquire a better understanding of the Chicano program. However, she sadly informed me that she was going to be very busy, thus directing me to a student worker from the program, Joana Reyes. I walked in through the door and the first thing I saw was a beautiful mural which had vivid colors that made it stand out from anything else in the room. The mural was created by Chano Gonzalez to represent the history of Raza students at UC Riverside (Chicano student center website). Figure 1 Chano Gonzalez created this mural in 1975 for Chicano Student Program. (French, 1). I then turned and headed towards the front desk where saw a girl sitting behind looking at the computer. I asked her if she knew who Joana Reyes, to my luck she informed me it was her. We then walked together to a small, private office located next to the front desk. I then continued by asking her why the program was called the Chicano student center rather than the Latino student center, she then answered “the program was founded by young children of immigrants who fought for the space to be able to have this program in the school. And this program also shares the same three main values of Chicanismo which are familia (family), orgullo (pride), and corazon
