The Chief Information Officer (CIO plays a vital role in higher education. The CIO provides leadership to the college as it related to all technology and information systems functions in support of the institution (Armstrong, Simer & Spaniol 2011). The Chief Information Officer also develops and maintains partnerships with students, faculty and staff to promote the advancement of the technological needs for the campus. This position requires strong leadership skills and strategic planning to advance the technology of the institution in a new direction (Hawkins, 2004). The leadership of the CIO should be strong and forward-thinking to achieve the highest standards of technological support for the school, students and staff. One challenge that a CIO may face is funding technology projects and resources. These technology projects and resources are often times include hardware and software replacements and upgrades (Woodsworth, 1987). Because of budget constraints and the increased cost of technology needs, technology projects are major issues for many colleges. The technology needs are vital to the institutions if they are to remain competitive with other colleges (Barone, 1998). The CIO must develop a strong relationship with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as they could provide guidance in seeking funding sources.
