Chief David L. Perry is the current Chief of Police at Florida State University (FSU), and formerly in Albany, GA and Clemson University. Chief Perry describes many situations that arise around a collegiate campus and what measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the FSU campus. The major emphasis throughout the presentation was on safety of the FSU campus. Early on in the presentation Chief Perry made the statement that a plentiful amount occurs behind the scenes that the students are unaware of. The example that was provided is when an undercover officer, whom is dressed in street clothes, appears near the tunnel to ensure the safety of the students who cross through, as it is known to be an area of concern for FSU students. Chief Perry states that the minimum amount of hours that an officer must undergo is 56 hours, while Florida State’s officers have undergone over 300 hours. Chief Perry highlights the importance of preventative action against crime through responsible personal actions. Making smart choices are essential to safety of students, as the FSU Police Department can assist with issues, however making logical and mature decisions can ensure personal safety. Chief Perry provided many insightful pieces of insider knowledge, such as the First 45 Day Plan. The First 45 Day Plan is the FSU Police Departments approach to combatting the statistic that a majority of issues that students encounter in college, occur within the first 45 days of the school year. This is previously unknown to myself, as students tend to try and make friends during this period and often leads to many decisions that one would not otherwise make.
