In the book Watership Down by Richard Adams a group of rabbits go out on a journey to escape their warren. They escape because Fiver who is a small rabbit living in the warren has a vision that something bad is going to happen to the warren. He convinces Hazel (his older brother) to escape with a group of rabbits out of their warren without the Thearah, who is the chief rabbit’s, permission. During their journey, they come across many enemies like the warrens they encountered. First they encountered Cowslip’s warren where they did not act like normal rabbits and when they went to Efrafa, the council was over controlling and tried to attack them. While in Efrafa, Bigwig, who is one of the rabbits who is strong and a good fighter, brought back …show more content…

All the rabbits were preparing to leave to find a new warren, when Holly, who is one of the warren Officers/Police, tries to arrest Bigwig and Silver, who are both rabbits, because they left the Owsla. The Owsla is basically the council for the rabbits and they are usually the strongest, most powerful rabbits in the warren. The group escapes Holly and he agrees not to arrest them even though he does not believe what Fiver thinks will happen to the warren. After Holly leaves they start off for the journey. “With Fiver beside him, he led the way out of the ditch and down the slope.” (p. 21). This shows that Hazel is the one who shows the way. It says that he lead the way out of the ditch which shows that the rabbits trust him enough to follow him. When they are also afraid of going somewhere, Hazel leads the way for them so they feel more confident or so they simply know where to go. This also shows that Hazel knows where to go. The rabbits are in the process of escaping from the Sandleford warren (which is the original warren). They have made it over a river which Fiver and Pipkin, who is Fiver’s friend and very small, can not swim through. Thanks to Blackberry who is one of their very smart and clever friends, he made a raft which got them over safely. Hazel has also taken a thorn out of Pipkin’s paw. They now have come across a road and Bigwig is the only one who know what a road is …show more content…

Hazel and the rabbits have just arrived outside Cowslip’s Warren but they have not met anyone who lives there yet. Cowslip’s Warren is the warren that they first come across. They are a very interesting bunch of rabbits who worship to stones and laugh. They also have a man in the fields who shoots predators for them so they stay alive. They are feeding in the field when a strange rabbit starts staring at them. Hazel is curious and wants Blackberry, one of his clever friends, to come with him to talk to the rabbit. “‘I’m going over to speak to that rabbit,’ said Hazel. ‘I want you to come with me.’” (p. 62). This shows that Hazel is not afraid to go first and take risks for the rabbits. It says that Hazel is going over to speak to the rabbit who he does not know. He wants to include Blackberry mostly because it could be dangerous and they do not know if this new rabbit will be nice or not. They are very cautious as approaching the rabbit which could be identified as a quality for non-leaders but in fact it is good to be cautious sometimes to make sure that you do not get hurt. Hazel and the Rabbits are back at their newly formed warren with the does they took out of Efrafa. General Woundwort, who is the mean nasty general of Efrafa, is following them with a patrol of smart, fighting rabbits. Blackavar, who is a buck they snuck out of Efrafa because he was being treated
