Benefits of Child Abduction Laws Over 120,000 children were abducted from their homes, schools, or parks in the year 1995. After child abduction laws were established, the number of kids kidnapped per year dropped a couple thousand each year and continues to get smaller. Child abduction laws help communities all over the United States keep children safe in their homes. The creation of the Amber Alert and Jessica’s Law greatly benefit law enforcement in apprehending and sentencing child kidnappers. These child abduction laws have helped our government and local law enforcement prevent kidnappings and abductions across the United States. There are many laws and acts to help protect against child abduction. The majority of the house believes that we need to stop or reduce child abduction. “The House on March voted 410-14 to approve legislation designed to reduce incidents of child abduction, such as recently solved Elizabeth Smart case in Utah (Cohen 1006).” If the House voted almost unanimously on putting this law into place, then I’m sure we can all agree that this law is only meant to help us and causes no harm. I believe that these laws have brought our communities and people together, so that we may protect our children against kidnappers. The main targets for these abductions are juveniles. They often suffer during and after their capture. For example, they make them cut and dye their hair, change their name, and literally strip them of their true identity. The child was last seen in bed, but when the family checked on her, she was gone. A male acquaintance staying with them was also missing, along with the family’s van. An A.M.B.E.R. alert was activated, including the use of cell phone messages via wireless emergency alert with a description and a license plate for the vehicle. A clerk at a gas station saw the alert and recognized the vehicle, along with the suspicious man and a girl he claimed as his daughter. This information enabled police to focus their search efforts and locate the vehicle. The child was safely recovered and the abductor was arrested. Without A.M.B.E.R. alert, the child could have never been found because of how reasonable it sounded for the girl to have been the grown man’s daughter.
