It was a calm, quiet morning in June of 1991 when Jaycee Dugard’s stepfather witnessed his eleven-year-old stepdaughter get abducted while she was walking from her house to her school bus stop. Who were the perpetrators behind the kidnapping of this little girl? Unfortunately, there are many kidnap and sexual assault victims, like Jaycee, who live among us. While many parents are terrified their children will be abducted, child abduction rates have actually declined dramatically, but if a child is abducted, he or she will experience traumatic repercussions from that experience. In the case of child abduction, some perpetrators have their own agenda when it comes to this subject matter. Child abductors, in most cases, kidnap a child for a variety of reasons, some of which include: money, susceptibility, ignorance, or revenge. Daniel tells us in his article “Child Abduction – What are the causes” (Carole Sund Foundation 2013) about the possible reasons for child abduction. He tells us, “Children are more susceptible to abduction because they are innocent and are easily swayed by abductor’s tricks…people abduct children and ask for monitory ransom…some people choose to abduct children as the best way of getting back at their parents. Grudges are settled by making parents have sleepless nights.” This writer basically describes that the reasons for child abduction are because of deep, emotional outbreaks that have occurred in the abductor’s life or just for the plain reason that they are selfish. Abductors are being egotistical when they take a child away from their parents. They do it for their own benefit and pleasure without even thinking about what they are putting the child’s parents/guardians through.
