Extent of Maltreatment: The household consist of Shaquana L. Wright 37, (maltreating caregiver/mother), Demecia Harris 4, (victim), and Annie Howard (Grandmother). Shaquana Wright, 37(maltreating caregiver), mother of Demecia does not reside in the home Annie Howard (maternal grandmother/caregiver) but frequently visits the home of to care for the child. The maltreatment addressed in this case is Substance Misuse and Environmental Hazards. The child in the home is functioning normally. Child is not exhibiting hunger issues or looking unkempt.
In 1870, child abuse was first introduced by the events that happened to an eight year old, named Mary Ellen Wilson, who was experiencing several beatings in the home of her biological father and step-mother, in Great Britain. During the 1870’s Mary experienced extreme beating, and was removed from the home (Walkins, 1990). Mary’s story started in 1874, while living with her biological father’s new wife Mary McCormack Connolly. Mrs. Connolly would beat the child, and would not provide for Mary’s basic welfare. It was not until Etta Wheeler, a Methodist mission who visited the home that Mary’s abuse was first confirmed the abuse of a child.

Our foster care system was developed in the 19 century, and it all started with Charles Loring Brace taking in homeless children. The system has come a long way since it started by passing laws, such as the child abuse prevention and treatment act, that protect children, and among another things, however, it still has problems. Some of the major issues they have are children placements, preparing them for adulthood, the rules and regulations with the foster parents, and drug abuse among teens in foster care. Child welfare promises these kids a place to call home, to be loved, supported and cherished, as every child should. Some of these kids go from foster home to another one, which affects them in their development.

Describe the actions to take if a child or young person alleges harm or abuse in line who policies and procedures of own setting. If a child alleges harm or abuse it is vital that the person that they tell are trained to deal with this effectively so that the child can be reassured that they have done the right thing and that the allegation can be acted upon. The school at which I work provides regular Safeguarding training to all staff which refers to policies such as Keeping Children Safe in Education, as well as providing practical advice to all staff in the event of a disclosure.
A big problem in the system that they fail to see is abuse. Abuse can be done emotionally, sexually and physically also mistreatment and neglect, all done by these certified state caregivers. My research would include children who have experienced trauma and see how they are coping. I would also interview adults who have experienced trauma as children and see how they are coping.
