Unfortunately, some places in the United States - referred to as “child care deserts”- lack access to sufficient, quality options for those who need them. A "childcare desert" refers to an area where there is a lack of available, accessible, and affordable childcare options for families. These areas can be found in both urban and rural areas, and are often characterized by a high poverty rate, low median income, and a lack of childcare providers.

The study found that financial, safety, and social concerns were all major issues for those living in childcare deserts. Financially, parents are often forced to choose between enrolling their children in an expensive, but possibly unlicensed and unsafe care provider. For parents and children, the financial concerns also associated with childcare deserts include the high cost of care, which can be a significant financial burden for families, especially low-income families. Safety concerns for parents include the lack of safe and healthy environments for children, which can put children at risk for accidents or abuse. Social concerns for parents include the lack of social and educational opportunities for children, which can negatively impact their cognitive and emotional development. For children, financial concerns may include growing up in poverty, safety concerns may include being in an unsafe environment, and social concerns may include lack of access to education and social opportunities which may have long-term effects on their life chances and opportunities. Examples of initiatives to address child care deserts include the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) in the United States, which provides funding to states to increase the availability of child care for low-income families, and the "Child Care Deserts" report by the Center for American Progress, which identifies areas with the greatest need for child care assistance. Increasing funding for childcare programs can have a significant impact on addressing the financial, safety, and social concerns of both parents and children and childcare providers. Additional funding for childcare programs can be used to reduce the cost of child care for families, making it more affordable for low-income families to access child care services. This can help to alleviate the financial burden that many families face when trying to find quality care for their children.
