The well-being of children is a collective responsibility, and access to quality child care and early education is a critical factor in a child’s development. Not only do childcare centers provide educational enrichment and socialization, but they also create employment opportunities for providers. Unfortunately, some places in the United States - referred to as “child care deserts”- lack access to sufficient, quality options for those who need them. A "childcare desert" refers to an area where there is a lack of available, accessible, and affordable childcare options for families. The study found that financial, safety, and social concerns were all major issues for those living in childcare deserts. Financially, parents are often forced to choose between enrolling their children in an expensive, but possibly unlicensed and unsafe care provider. For parents and children, the financial concerns also associated with childcare deserts include the high cost of care, which can be a significant financial burden for families, especially low-income families. Safety concerns for parents include the lack of safe and healthy environments for children, which can put children at risk for accidents or abuse. Social concerns for parents include the lack of social and educational opportunities for children, which can negatively impact their cognitive and emotional development. For children, financial concerns may include growing up in poverty, safety concerns may include being in an unsafe environment, and social concerns may include lack of access to education and social opportunities which may have long-term effects on their life chances and opportunities. Increasing funding for childcare programs can have a significant impact on addressing the financial, safety, and social concerns of both parents and children and childcare providers.
