In her cogent essay, “Live Free and Starve,” directed at liberals and those in support of a bill passed by the U.S. congress that bans the import of goods from countries that have child labor, Chitra Divakaruni reasons on the subject of child labor in developing countries. In a persuasive tone, Divakaruni contends that the aforementioned bill is misguided in its intent. She argues that while the intentions behind the bill are good-willed, the bill would not be effective in its goal of helping the children. Divakaruni offers a unique perspective on child labor in foreign countries to increase awareness on how there is more to the situation of child labor than meets the eye.

Sanjiri has never attended any school because his family needs him to work so he could help financially. All over the world for centuries now we have children just like Sanjiri, who cannot attend school because they come from families who are very poor. Not only does child labor apply to those children who are working in factories or in agriculture but also to girls who are taken as wives or for prostitution and boys who are taken as soldiers.
Child labor is a broad term that describes all employment of those under the age of 14. This has caused an issue in recent times, where many are pressuring major companies to stop allowing children to join their workforce because it is seen as wrong in their culture. Child labor should continue because most of the time it is performed out of necessity, it is not inherently dangerous, and while some may argue that children are deprived of their education while employed, they are learning practical skills and supporting their families at the same time. Many children do work in order to provide for their impoverished families, where it is necessary for them to bring in extra income.

The use of children caused a negative impact on society . Children lost their childhood by working in factories for long hours , separated from their families and forced to do hard work.
The conditions for child labor were becoming horrible gigantic issues. In 1900 more than 1.75 million kids fifteen and under worked at factories, mines, and mills. Tragedies, death, accidents, and injuries have had happened because of these conditions. Some of these deaths were unbelievable, for example the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. The owners didn’t trust the children and thought they would steal their items, so they locked and blocked the doors; those lives had ended that day.
Looking at the recent statistics there are currently 75 million people aged 15 to 24 who are unemployed and have to settle for a job that gives them an unfair income , no security in the workplace , social protection basically a fair working attribute. Normally child laborers are more likely to have a limited amount of education. Children that are up to the age of 15 are more likely to get low paying jobs. Child Labor is a huge issue and should be put to an end , justice is very much needed under these circumstances. Not many
children sometimes work up to 19 hours a day. Only giving them a one hour total break.” (Child Labor in Factories, 1). Many children who worked in the factories would not be able to read or write because they were deprived from their childhood and education. These working conditions did not end until the reformers started to protests and child labor laws were put into motion.
By the end of my speech, 212 underprivileged children around the world would be clenching their stomach and wobbling from garbage dumps to garbage dumps, searching for half- eaten food. 5 children in India would leave school to work in a dilapidated undergarment factory for 14 straight hours, enduring whipping, and pain just for 3 bowls of rice. 3 children in Africa would be dead after being beheaded by heartless invaders. The power to change this situation lies with every one of you present today. Basic necessity such as food, basic education, security are few of many things that underprivileged children lack.
But not all work done by children should be accepted as child labor. In other words, if a work doesn’t harm child’s health or personal development (educational issues), it is generally accepted as something positive and useful. Such activities develop children’s skills, provide experience and formulate them to be part of society.
