If a child or young person alleges harm or abuse, it is important to be aware of the school procedures to be followed for reporting concerns about that particular child. I read an article on Huffington Post dated October 2014, that stated from 2001 to 2012 6,488 American troops were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. During that time 11,766 American women were murdered by their current or ex partners. I believe those number speaks volumes on the current and ongoing problem with intimate partner violence in the United States. I would be extremely surprised if a student in our classes hasn’t been affected by this in some way. I am an IPV survivor, when I was 18 I met my daughters dad.
Any professional working with children or young people is responsible for the care and well being of those children. Making sure that a child is safe on or out of a school setting is of paramount importance. Not only does it make a child or young person feel safe in a learning environment but it also gives the child the security to develop and achieve from an early age. For children to be effectively protected, it is essential that everyone accepts the responsibility of their role and to also be protected in that role. E.g. when escorting a child to the toilet or a child needs to be undressed due to any accident, it is vital that another member of staff or child is present as to not allow any allegations of misconduct.

Signs of a child being physically abused include bruises, cuts, burns, fractures, internal injuries or brain damage. When none of these characteristics are present, it cannot be considered child abuse. A typical spanking should not cause any of those types of injuries. In fact, spanking is considered acceptable in our society and sometimes very necessary to discipline a child. A spanking is an open-handed hit on the behind, which should never cause severe bruising, bleeding, or scars.

However, physical abuse is considered to be a use of punishment in wrecked as well as normal families such as the use of physical force with the intent of inflicting bodily pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correction or control or discipline. Yet, there is a thin line between physical punishment and abuse which many parents seem to lack notice of.
