Childhood in the United States Hailey Butterwegge University of Northern Iowa The family is a fundamental institution in society that plays a vital role in the socialization of individuals. Childhood is a significant stage in the development of an individual, and it is through the family that children learn essential life skills, values, and beliefs that will shape their future. Changes in family structure, technology breakthroughs, and cultural upheavals, among others, have all contributed to how childhood has changed over time in the United States (Ciabattari 2017). Families in the United States have changed significantly throughout time, particularly in respect to childhood. Childhood underwent more changes around the end of the 20th century, changes that have persisted to the present. Children now face both new chances and challenges as a result of the development of new technology like smartphones, social media, and the internet (Ciabattari 2017). The lines separating work and pleasure, home and school, and public and private life have all become more hazy as a result of the digital age. Changes in parenting and family relations have also been influenced by the development of two-income households, divorce rates, and the demise of conventional gender roles. Childhood has been impacted by this exposure to technology in both positive and harmful ways. On the plus side, kids now have access to a variety of knowledge, learning tools, and entertainment that they did not have before. The modification of parents' involvement in their children's life is one of the most important effects. In the past, parents had a stronger authoritarian influence on their children's lives, and kids had less agency and autonomy. Today, though, parents are urged to adopt a more cooperative style of parenting, where they collaborate with their kids to define objectives and make choices. This strategy encourages children's development as independent, responsible adults while acknowledging the value of their voices. The effect of technology on kids' development is another result of changes in childhood. While technology can be an effective tool for education and pleasure, it can also negatively impact children's sociability and mental health. For instance, too much screen time might result in social isolation, sleep issues, and obesity. As a result, it is crucial for parents to keep an eye on how their kids use technology and to make sure they get a good balance of screen time and other
