The movie Children of a Lesser God theme Is based on a love story between characters James and Sarah. The story’s plot deals with the barriers of basic communication. The communication disorder that is portrayed in this film is Deafness. It is both a tragic yet beautiful story. The movie was based on a play about James, who is a talented new teacher for the deaf and Sarah who is deaf and who can not speak. Sarah actually went to the school, graduated from there and is now employed there as a janitor. James works with children helping them learn to speak. When he meets Sarah, he feels that he could do the same for her. In the movie Sarah uses sign language as her primary language and has already expressed that she doesn’t want James to help her. She has no interest in learning to speak and admits to not knowing how to read lips. James sees this as a challenge for him and he pursues Sarah but “accidently” bumping into her here and there. I feel as the disorder was portrayed pretty accurately. The actress who played Sarah, Marlee Matlin is an actually deaf, so she did her job well. For instance, James and Sarah’s relationship is co-dependent. James doesn’t always act like an equal in their relationship, where he acts as someone who is authoritative and wants to control Sarah. People assume that someone who is deaf wants to be controlled and told what to do, when in reality, they don’t. Another stereotype shown was violence. There was a scene where Sarah was throwing pots and pans in the kitchen – this makes deafness have the potential for being a violent person. Since a person can’t voice their anger, they might be more adaptive to be be physical to express themselves as an outlet. Where this is untrue, anyone can get upset and be violently physically
