According to the ‘Chivalry or Paternalism Theory’, patriarchal cultures tend to identify women as defenseless, childlike, submissive, weak or simply not fully responsible for their actions (Herzog and Oreg, 2008; Embry and Lyons, 2012). From this stance, “well”-socialized individuals come to believe that female offenders need to be protected rather than punished. Female offenders, contrary to male counterparts, are often considered victims of a socialized environment that has failed to provide the necessary guidance and supervision (Herzog and Oreg, 2008; Embry and Lyons, 2012).
