As shown in the novel Ella Minnow Pea, by Mark Dun, the restrictions on the language negatively affects the islanders. This is shown through Amos Minnow Pea, Mittie Purcy, and Georganne Towgate. First, Amos Minnow Pea is negatively affected by the language laws set by the council .As more letters begin to fall and Amos is caught with the decision to drink again, Gwenette states that,” Amos wasn’t silent. In fact, Amos, Thanks to chugging back four bottles of stout lager, was anything but silent.
The short story “Fresh Fruit” by Marisella Viega and “He and I” by Natalia Ginzburg share similar meaning and structure between the two. Both stories use symbolism and imagery to convey the struggles of a complex relationship. Although they have similar meanings, they also have differences such as style and theme. In "Fresh Fruit," the narrator struggles with a lack of power and control in her relationship with her husband.
In The Dancer by Vickie Sears a young girl, Clarissa, finds herself and her confidence through dance. This took time, devotion and passion. At first, Clarissa was young, a bit odd and very isolated, this is shown in line 61 “as quiet as she could be, she was”. As Clarissa grew up she found something she loved (dancing) and practiced it alot. Showing how far Clarissa has come, the foster mom said “There Clarissa was, full up with music.
Character Profile: Dancer The Dancer by Vickie Sears is a short story about a five-year-old aboriginal girl named Clarissa who was lost in the world like many others. In the beginning of the story, Clarissa has just been put into a foster home where she is described to be scared and filled with anger. When walking into this foster home, Clarissa had only brought enough stuff that could fit into a paper bag.
Sweat is a 2017 playwright piece by Lynn Nottage (produced by Dramatists Play Service, Inc). The show covers an array of themes including industrialization, race, economics, and addiction. It follows a group of nine characters, all living within the same Pennsylvania community. The characters also all work for the same factory, “Olstead’s.” The shows swap back between 2 different years: 2000 and 2008.
In the 1980’s, many Indio’s were sexually assaulted, tortured and killed during the Guatemalan civil war. Gabriela, the main character in “Tree Girl” by Ben Mikaelsen, is a survivor of the Guatemalan civil war. Gabriela, a 15-year-old girl living in a small Guatemalan canton, experienced unspeakable things such as the deaths of the people in her canton, the witnessing of the pueblo massacre, and the fear of being caught by soldiers on her journey to Mexico. There are many important lessons to learn from this book, including how hope allows you to see past hatred. As you read through the book you learn similar lessons to the extent of what Gabriela had learned.
Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns showcases various trials of grief and how characters deal with it. At the beginning of the book, the death of Mattie Lou Toy, a beloved grandmother, wife and mother sends shockwaves through Cold Sassy. The later deaths of Campbell Williams and Rucker Blakeslee shatter everyone even more. The loved ones display all different types of grieving processes including uniquely distressing ones for grieving spouses and children. Grief can harm an individual’s physical and mental health and can cause many long term issues.
Along for the Ride, by Sarah Dessen is a captivating young adult, fiction book. It is about an eighteen year old girl who goes to live with her father and his new wife and child for the summer. When there, Auden realizes all the experiences she had missed out on. She meets many new friends and learns how to make up for lost time. Over the course of the summer Auden learns about love and heartbreak for the first time and she also learns to take chances, which in turn result in many new experiences and adventures.
People today are starting to value nature more than past generations did. All over the world people rely on nature for almost everything in their lives. Some people of today’s generation still do not think that nature is important to us because it does not directly affect them in their everyday lives. Beliefs about nature helping us through life are brought up in Annie Dillard’s essay “Living Like a Weasel” and in “Sky Tree” a myth from the huron tradition. They both have their own beliefs and thoughts about how nature helps us get through life, by looking at how they view nature the same and differently we see that nature is apart of our everyday lives and without it humans could go extinct.
Lastly, as a result of Margaret Thatcher in office, a new view of the family developed in the 1980s. The New Right is a group of intellectuals who consider the family as the foundation of all social policies. Thatcher and many Conservative politicians alleged that poor comportment by young people in schools or on the streets was resulting from a poor family background. They believed like functionalists that the perfect model of families was the nuclear family, and were particularly critical of single mothers; “the natural state should be 2 adults caring for their children” (Redwood, 1993).
In the essay “ Priceless Euphoria”, Lisa Monique talks about what the best things in life are. Monique's essay states that the best things in life aren't things you can buy or money. I certainly agree with her, money is good but it doesn't last forever. She explained the best things in life are for free. Some of the best things are people, emotions, and nature.
The main reason that people take risks is because it activates the dopamine receptors in your brain. Dopamine gives you a thrilling feeling and pleasure. Also, it can be a reward for taking a risk. Red Glass by Laura Resau is about Sophie's journey bringing a boy home and discovering love and herself in one. I chose Sophie and Nola to feature for risk taking.
The short story “The Third WIsh” written by Joan Aiken takes place in the forest of Savernake during just any usual Spring evening. In this heartwarming short read, the protagonist, Mr, Peters, was going about his everyday life, with no doubts. As he was driving his car on this clear spring evening, he suspected suspicious movements and sounds, as if someone was in trouble and in desperate need for help. It ended up being a bird, who was tied up in the bushes. Mr. Peters managed to give the poor bird the assistance it needed, As a reward for rescuing him, the swan provided the man with three wishes.
Fire is a fantasy novel by Kristin Cashore, the novel is about a girl named Fire who lives in the land of Dells. Fire is the last human monster, who is beautiful and amazingly talented. Fire is so beautiful that she has the ability to control human and animals minds when they are around her. When I read this novel, I felt anxious. I felt this because the story was so engaging that I began to feel connected to the characters.
On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the city of New York. On that fateful day, two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and flew straight into the twin towers. Each tower fell completely to the ground, taking thousands of lives with it and injuring thousands more. Not only did that day leave thousands of families without their loved ones, it also left an entire city and an entire country to deal with the aftermath of the destruction. Poet, Nancy Mercado, worries that one day people will forget that heartbreaking day.
