Even though a culture has gone through drastic time should society be ashamed or willing to embrace? Nikki Giovanni, a poet and civil rights activists, wrote the poem Ego-Tripping which was published in 1972. The poem is about how the speaker speaks on her origin showing the readers her strength and power to embrace the culture she holds which is African-American. Nikki Giovanni establishes this by making herself a goddess who holds all these accomplishments. For example, conceiving a daughter named Nefertiti meaning beautiful woman, and Nikki is proud of how confident, and powerful she has become.

The narrator within the poem perceives himself as superior to the subjects that he observes, and recognizes that they behave as savages due to the absence of rules and boundaries. They fail to acknowledge the error in their destructive behavior and continue to act with free will, which portrays human nature as wicked and unruly. One of them glanced at the narrator and insinuated that they were equals, which implies that the narrator also indulges in sinful behavior with the rest of them. Despite the narrator’s feeling of superiority, their actions reflect the same manner as those they view as beneath them. There exists a domino effect that causes the behavior of others to influence the nature of those surrounding them.
She is describing how men want things done their way and women who do not cater to their needs get punished. The men never take responsibilities for their actions towards their women. This entire poem signifies how women bend over backward for their husband and get no rewards or praises in the end. In a world surrounded by choices, people are confronted with easy-to-make and, conversely, challenging decisions. A decision can be influenced by one’s own experience, logic, and feelings. Making a decision is synonymous with a result; whatever choice one accepts, results in a particular outcome.
