Rose Chavez Miss Escarcega ENG I 22 May 2023 Argument Essay: Choices and Destinies In the play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, Benvolio tried to convince Romeo to forget the women that he could not have, in which Romeo responded, “Show me a mistress that is passing fair; What doth her beauty serve but as a note/ Where I may read who passed that passing fair? Farewell. Thou canst not teach me to forget.” (1.1.28-31). Likewise, this instance exemplifies how the protagonists in the play had their choices uncontrolled for them. More specifically, this illustrates the control not exerted over him because he fell in love with Juliet the second he laid eyes on her which proves how his love for her was very impulsive. This stands out with great importance because Juliet decided to marry Romeo because of the pleasing thought of being with him when he could not justify his love for her. For example, in the text, Juliet states, “It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be/Ere one can say "It lightens." Sweet, good night.” (2.2.118-120), which confirms how their love was sudden and has no strength that backs up their apparent “love”. This proves that Juliet didn’t know what she was doing when accepting to marry Romeo because she didn’t have time to reflect on the situation she was putting herself in. To reiterate it is important to note that Friar Lawrence also warned Romeo that he was being impulsive and not thinking clearly as he was still in love with someone else not so long ago because as previously stated in the text, “Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young men's love then lies/Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” (2.3.66-68) which proves that Romeo was also not thinking clearly or acting the right way.
