Chris Anderson’s book The Future of a Radical Price, made some very interesting points about the ways that advertising is changing, and how it is affecting businesses. A major point that was made was that Newspapers seem to be getting the brunt of this new way of advertising. Newspapers only gather revenue from two sources, its advertisers and its readers, the internet aka the new form of advertising is taking away both of these revenue sources for newspapers. Readers are wanting to get their information from the internet because they feel that it is “newsier” than actual print newspapers. Twitter and Flickr have been culprits as well. They are not only able to share free information and pictures in real time, but they also have the draw of “word of mouth” advertising. People are more likely to believe or go buy something when they hear it from someone they trust. This new way of people communicating old or new products is what is drawing advertisers away from print newspapers. A simple free post on a social media site such as Pinterest could get a company many more buyers than one simple ad that they had to pay for in a print newspaper. Due to the fact that newspapers are losing their two main sources of income, many local newspapers in London and America are starting to shut down. The book talks about how people don’t want something that is almost free or basically free, they want something that is actually free. Offline when people hear free they think it is just a gimmick. However, when online, people know that free is a real thing especially when heard through word of mouth or through a social media site. Often times companies will have contests through facebook or instagram or whatever social media site and offer something free in return. Shelby talked about how she created a contest for a company in which she knew little to nothing about and offered a free t-shirt. At first she said that there weren’t very many responses to her weekly question. However, very quickly her contest grew to be something that people needed and looked forward to. Her idea was a great way to use social media and something so simple as a free t-shirt to draw people into the brand that she was advertising for.
