Chris McCandless was a lot of things. Some say that he was an idiot for wanting to go to Alaska with no supplies, some say that he was fun and very friendly to others. Everyone has their own opinion on his life story. Chris McCandless was admired for his many talents and bravery which led him to go into to the wild in order to carry out his own happiness. Not everyone agreed with Chris’ choices, especially his parents. His parents were supportive of his decisions but didn’t like the fact that he was going to be going on a road trip and they wouldn’t be seeing him all the time. But what they didn’t know is that they were the main reason why he was leaving in the first place. Before Chris was born, “Walt’s split from his first wife, Marcia, was not a clean or amicable parting. When Chris was born, his father still had a relationship going on with Marcia in secret, dividing his time between the two households, and the two families.” (Krakauer 121). Once when their parents were in an argument, Billie “shrieked toward her husband as he walked away and said ‘I’m sorry kids, but when I got pregnant with Chris, I got stuck with your father!’” (McCandless 11). Because of what Billie had said, “Chris was crying desperately, in anguish over being born, apologizing for causing such trouble.” (McCandless 11). If you tell a child that, they’re going to grow up thinking everything is their fault. In other words, don’t tell a child it’s their fault for anything, you’re going to make them think they’re not worth it
