The sound of a slap. The sound of something crashing into a table with dishes on it. The sound of a body thudding to the ground. Jason hears all this from the combination living room and kitchen he shared with Sheri. Even though the Miller’s house was three doors down sound travels far in this quiet Christian Camp Ground. “Sounds like Ashleigh got out of line again. There is a flood light in the center meeting hall that almost feels like a light house light. The roads are gravel as she drives away from the center on the main road that leads out. After begging and pleading with Jason, he finally let her get pepper spray (cause he’ll always protect her, he says) but Sheri never feels safe outside of their home on the campground. There are not many people that live in the campground (though a lot of abandoned houses) and she is friendly with all of them. It’s surrounded on three sides with woods and the last with the Des Plain’s River, she always feared someone would jump out at her, especially on these mornings when she has to be at work so damn early as her car clock hands sit on 5:36AM. Several hours later, after Sheri’s feet already hurt from moving trays back and forth from tables, Jason gets out of bed, takes a long piss and pours himself a cup of coffee Sheri made for him on timer. It’s cold, but not too cold, thinks Jason, she almost timed it right. Not bothering to shower, he throws on a coat of fresh deodorant and different clothes before heading outside for his morning
