Imagine a car speeding around a looped road. Though it may seem like this car is headed toward someplace, in reality, it will ultimately end up where it was in the beginning, just to begin looping around the road all over again. Now imagine another car, however, this one has a very specific purpose. Rather than driving in circles, it heads toward a mapped destination. These two vehicles represent two differing world views. The first car is similar to the world views of the Greeks, including Homer, and philosophers, such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, with no purpose or hope but to do anything but drive in circles. The world views of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Homer offer no happiness or purpose; on the other hand, the Christian world view gives one hope and a clear purpose for his life. One of the reasons a Christians have such a clear purpose in life is because of the God they believe in.
This part of one’s belief is very important, because of all the factors involved in creating one’s world view, the god one puts his trust in glues the rest of the aspects together. There are many different ideas about the nature of God. If one were to look through the eyes of Socrates, he would discover that Socrates believed in immortal, good, and just gods. He thought there were many gods, and a head, most important god, Apollo. However, he decided that man’s own reason was much more important than the laws and whims of these gods. Socrates’ student, Plato, agreed with Socrates on most of his ideas about the nature of god. On the other hand, Aristotle believed quite the opposite of the two. He presumed that there was an “unmoved mover,” who did not create the world, but set all things into motion.
