In the book Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt, the character Angela McCourt is one of the most dependable and loyal mothers in all of literature. Even though Angela goes through many spells of depression throughout the memoir, her dedication to her family and her perseverance through adversity is what makes her a great mother and an extraordinary person. Throughout the memoir Angela faces many challenges, which include her husband, who spends all of their very little money on alcohol and eventually abandons the family. This left Angela as the sole provider. Additionally, the death of her daughter Margaret and her twin sons Oliver and Eugene drove Angela into a state of depression.
At the start of the novel, Lutie Johnson is portrayed as a hard working women who is looking to turn her life around to improve her current situation. She buys this house on the street as a step in an upward movement for a place for her and her son Bub to live. From there she has a bright plan to find a job and earn enough money to eventually find a nicer and more permanent house. At this point she has the ambition and will, but unfortunately from here on out the racism and sexism gets to her head and we only see a downward trend. Throughout Luties experiences on the street we see her initial motivation begin to deteriorate; the incidents with Jones and Bub quickly build up and eventually force her to make poor decisions.
Additionally, her instinctive response is something that black people and slaves get punished and hurt for since they were considered inferior to white people at the time; the past to which Dana travels to is dangerous due to the treatment black people received. On her second trip to the past, Dana was almost raped by a white patroller: “I was only able to move a few inches before he pinned me down, but that was far enough for me to discover that the thing I had hit my head on was a heavy stick― a tree limb, perhaps. I grasped it with both hands and brought it down as hard as I could on his head” (Butler 43). In a moment of danger, Dana used her instinct to help ward off her predator. She was “[pinned down]” by a white patroller, whose job in the 1800s included monitoring and disciplining the slaves, but often led to torturing and harassing them in various inhumane ways.
This quote shows that once Dana travels back to the plantation, she has to constantly correct herself because of how the basic human activity was so different in each time period. The fact that Dana has to correct her normal behavior because of how inhumanly she was treated shows how Dana has to adjust between the two time
Dana goes back in time during the slave days where racism was very common, and this piece of evidence shows how rude people of color were treated. Butler draws on that experience to convey the universal theme that racism happened frequently in the past, but it’s still occurring today. Through this novel, Butler speaks to the reader with the message that racism is something that continues, and will keep on continuing for a long time. The words“ job and white” show a negative connotation, and implies that people of color did not have very pleasant lives before. Dana experienced time traveling to the past, which lead to an external conflict of dealing with racism and slavery.
