During the holidays of 2013, UPS could not handle the mass amounts of online orders placed before Christmas. Since there are many parts to supply chain, there is no standard path when entering the field. Some occupations to start off after receiving a degree are a customer service manager, warehouse operations manager, or an operations research analyst. The average starting salary of a Michigan State supply chain management graduate is around 55,000 and increases with experience. Companies line up to hand out jobs to Michigan State grads with a supply chain management degree, especially if you like to travel. Dr. Brian Jacobs, a supply chain professor here at Michigan State, has a lot of experience working overseas as he worked as a manufacturing manager in the Philippines. Dr. Jacobs told me about an interesting Supply chain job; companies often find labor and manufacturing overseas because it is cheaper. However, they invest loads of money in this international manufactures, so they must make sure they are secure. Firms will send a recruit to check out the manufactures and make sure it’s not a sweat shop. If it is up to standard, then the recruit will sign a contract with the manufacture and begin business. Apple is known for its iPhone and other 21st century technology. The production of these products stems from china, where the average worker would have to save up their salary for over two months in order to buy an Ipad. The increase demand for apple products, forced even more production. Some workers had shifts of up to 24 hours, driving them to the breaking point. A few years ago, there were a nine suicides within three months at the factory; forcing apple to build a netting along the side of the building. Sweatshop is an understatement and although the work is insanely cheap, it is not good for a company to associate itself with a sweatshop like
