In Angus McBride’s painting, the Christmas Truce, and Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, soldiers socialize with enemy soldiers and respect one another even though they are supposed to hate the other men. On the western border of Germany, British and German soldiers held a temporary ceasefire on Christmas Eve. Inspired by this event, McBride paints these soldiers chatting, playing soccer, and sharing drinks together. On the ground, the barbed wire that once separated the two sides has been cut and put aside (McBride).
