It is said that Christopher Columbus discovered America; however, that is not how it actually worked out. In 1942, Columbus reached what the Europeans considered to be “The New World” and what is now known as present day Florida, the Bahamas to be exact. The Europeans came to a place that was new to them and there they discovered other people already inhabited there. To this new world, Columbus brought with him and industrial mindset that he would use to grow a colony in these new parts.
I agree that his accidental discovery ultimately led to the massacre of countless Natives. Although, he might be considered a hero for 'discovering ' the New World. However, there were several who came before him and inhabited the land, such as the Natives. Thus, the impossibility of discovering something that had already been in place. For this reason, I would not consider Columbus a hero.
Some will claim Columbus discovered America and if he didn’t then America wouldn’t be the same as today. Columbus also discovered that the earth was round and not flat. Also 60% of America's food was discovered by him. Columbus did some good things but it did not make up for what he did, and he still killed many people, was a tyrant, and he was a slave
Christopher Columbus Hero or Villain ? Christopher Columbus is a Villain. On some accounts he can be a Hero. But on many other accounts he's a vicious Villain. Yes he discovered America ;
Columbus Day is celebrated in recognition of Columbus “discovering” America in 1492. Many consider him a hero for that one reason but don’t acknowledge what he did when he first reached America. I personally believe Columbus is not worthy of being called a hero for various reasons. One of the reasons is that Columbus killed millions of native Americans because of his lust for gold. The native Americans were kind and generous towards Columbus and his men, but he enslaved them and forced them to do his dirty work for him.
When I was in elementary and middle school, I was always taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. What I was not taught was the toll it took on the Natives in the Americas. Also, we were not taught about Christopher Columbus’ role before his voyage, such as his slave holdings. I found that article interesting because it gave me information that I was not taught so for in my education. I learned the reason for Columbus’ fame: the Founding Fathers needed a hero.
Who is Christopher Columbus? Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator. He is known for his 1492 'discovery' of the New World of the Americas on board his ship Santa Maria. Columbus promised to explore Asia and bring back gold, spices, and silk to the Spanish crown and spread Christianity to these far parts of the world which he didn't accomplish. Columbus, the
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Christopher Columbus is well known as the person who discovered the Americas. We even have a holiday called “Columbus Day” to honor him. However he does not deserve this credit due to the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy he left behind and the fact that he didn’t discover anything. Christopher punished those who questioned him, forced rape upon the Natives and forced the Native Americans to move west. He left behind a legacy of slavery, greed and genocide.
Columbus was not a hero because, first of all, he treated the Native Americans very badly. He tricked them, forced them to convert to Christianity, and more. Columbus knew what he was doing was wrong, and didn't bother to stop it. According to an entry in his journal dated October 13, 1492, "One seaman gave three Portuguese ceitis (not even worth a penny) for 25 pounds of spun cotton.
Many people are raised thinking that Columbus discovered America when in actuality it wasn't. The voyages of Christopher Columbus opened the New World but Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto is credited with the discovery of continental North America on June 24, 1497, under the commission of Henry VII of England. Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa. Christopher Columbus was “the oldest child of a family of weavers and woolen merchants from the Italian port of Genoa”. His family were respectable, but they were not wealthy” (TheSchoolRun).
According to Loewen, few textbooks explained how Columbus was involved in the slavery and the exploitation of Indians. Another error that we have learned in schools about Columbus is that he was the first person to “discover” America. However, this is an error because people from other continents had already reached America before 1492. In fact, we forget
When Christopher Columbus saw the Native Americans, he knew right away that they were gullible but smart people. Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and explorer. He was sponsored by the Spanish monarchy. He made 4 trips to the New World and his first trip was in 1492.Then New
Eventually he was able to sail. He changed history by never giving up. If he had given up, we would not have everything that we have today, and people would not know about the new land until years or months after he found the land. In conclusion, I think that Christopher columbus is a hero.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
