In the book Zinn, The author gives a point of view of Christopher Columbus that is usually not given. Most of the time the story of Christopher Columbus is told from a historian point of view. They usually tell you of his mission, and of the three ships that he takes in order to find gold and other new riches. Zinn informs us that he is not the hero that, that we all think that he is. It shows us that he tortured, abused, and overwhelmingly embarrasses the Arwark Indians.
Why is a killer, slave trader and rapist honored each year? Columbus is celebrated each year and around the 500th anniversary of Columbus Day many skepticisms were brought to light about Columbus and the terror he brought to the American Indians. Should Columbus Day be abolished and was he a villain? A villain is usually very selfish person that’s purpose is to bring terror to people who are undeserving of that terror. I think columbus day should be abolished because he killed millions of people, he traded slaves, he was a rapist, he was selfish and he forcefully changed cultures but his discoveries shouldn’t be ignored or forgotten because he was important for the exploration of America and the improvement in navigation.
For many years, people have debated over whether Christopher Columbus is a hero or a villain. Based on background research I have done, Columbus, to me, has proven to be a villain. Columbus forced the Indigenous people of America (Native Americans) to change their religion. He put them into slavery and abused them. They were also infected by the diseases that the Spaniards were immune to.
Yes we have a holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. But here are some reasons to why he's a evil man. Christopher Columbus mutilated and enslaved native people that he encountered on the Island soon to be called America. He encountered many different Natives when he Started to explore the new land he discovered. There were 60,000 people living on this island.
During the time period of which Columbus first set foot on the new world, peoples views on slavery were much different than ours today. They made exceptions to it as everyone owned slaves back them (Document 2). However, physical abuse and torture are no exception. Columbus has been exposed for his torture on the Taino tribe. Every three months Columbus demanded a hawk's bell of gold or 25 pounds of spun cotton from everyone over the age of fourteen.

But Christopher Columbus was in the first place a terribly interesting man — brilliant, audacious, volatile, paranoid, narcissistic, ruthless, and (in the end) deeply unhappy” (Toll). So as it turns out our noble adventurer wasn’t actually that noble. The one thing that Ian W. Toll did not mention is that Columbus was also a fraud.
A heavily debated topic in this day and age is if Christopher Columbus was really a hero or a mass murderer. On one hand, he opened up access to the New World and created trade routes, on the other, he primarily unintentionally almost wiped out a population and abused Native Americans. I believe that Columbus was more of a hero than he was a villain because he had a normal mindset and goal for Spaniards during the time period, many things he is blamed for happened completely unintentionally or by accident, and Columbus wasn’t the only one who had servants and took Natives captive. Often when looking back into history, we unintentionally judge events, people, and actions based off of our current mindset, and Christopher Columbus was no exception.

A quote from the text,“When we read the history books given to children in the United States, it all starts with heroic adventure-there is no bloodshed-and Columbus Day is a celebration” (Zinn 5). As a child I read “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a novel separated into two parts. The first part focuses on a girl named Jean-Louise Finch who chose the nickname “Scout,” wore overalls, and played with boys, trying to find her identity while resisting the societal pressures and expectations of being and what it means to be a female: someone who dresses neatly, stays at home, and doesn’t say much. I related to Scout as I too exhibited this tomboy persona. Throughout this time, I always preferred the first part of the novel because I could never personally connect to the trial: I thought as a society we were past being blinded by unexplainable hatred and going through on accusations against an innocent man. Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. When Christopher Columbus arrived he made businesses for people who wanted to work, and he made trade markets for people who wanted to buy goods from the old world such as jewelry, jewels, spices, perfume, etc; only the wealthy bought such items.
Even worse, they beheaded children, for their own amusement. What did Columbus do? Nothing. As a leader, he never stopped his men from committing these crimes, but instead watched as the hundreds of thousands of natives committed suicide, yet, people still glorify his name. A person who can watch the murder of millions without stopping it should not have a holiday that praises his good moments and hides
World War One was the first time the world saw what a true war without restraints or mercy causes to the world. Nations didn’t need to have a strong army but a strong ally with whom they can drag down into whatever war they wished to wage upon any nation they had the slightest disagreement to justify the bloodshed and the loss of the basic human nature leaving soldiers with nothing more than memories of the barbaric actions they had implemented into the war just because a country wished to obtain the spoils of war. World War One came as the first war were the mass production of the war machine came into the world making countries able to mobilize more than 5 million armed troops into war not even with the necessity of rationing weapons, ammunition, or uniforms because of the ease nations had on placing all of their production into the war effort thus making it possible for countries to now mobilize such immense number of armed troops into a war.
Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. Many italian americans are proud of Christopher Columbus because of his italian background.
