“Make me immortal with a kiss.” This is a quote from a man who was overshadowed by Shakespeare. William Shakespeare, the famous playwright who wrote Romeo and Juliet, was what most historians say, the greatest writer in the English language. However, do you know the man who inspired Shakespeare himself? Baptized on February 26, 1564 and murdered on May 30,1593. The short life of playwright and poet, Christopher Marlowe, was a fascinating one. Speculation of him being a secret agent have grabbed historians like a spiderweb. There are even doubts that Shakespeare wrote some of his plays, but instead stole some from Marlowe's work! Marlowe’s talent in dramatic tragedy is outstanding and is shown in Dr.Faustus. Taking that into consideration, it is safe to assume that if he had lived longer, he probably would have been the one dominant to Shakespeare. He went to King's School until he was granted a scholarship. Allowing Marlowe to be educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree. “Surviving Cambridge records from the period show that Marlowe has several lengthy absences from the university, longer than allowed by the school’s regulations”(Biography.com). All these absences almost caused Marlowe to not be granted his Master’s Degree. The Privy Council sent a letter to the university proclaiming that he was employed on “benefiting of his country.” Entitling Marlowe to earning his degree on time. From what I can get from this, I would say that Marlowe had an easy, early life, getting to skip classes because he was a secret agent.
