The beginning of a life Christopher Marlowe being the second eldest child of nine was born in Canterbury, England to John Marlowe and Katherine Arthur around February of 1564, just 2 months before Shakespeare. “Christopher Marlowe was baptised at the church of St. George the Martyr, Canterbury, on Saturday 26 February, 1564” (Urry.) He spent most of his childhood in a house that was on the corner of Saint George’s street and Saint George’s Lane. Four of Marlowe’s siblings died, causing him to be the only boy of the surviving five. Eventually, he went to King’s school, and did so well that he was given a scholarship to Corpus Christi College in Cambridge (not Texas). His college roommate Thomas Kyd was being tried for treason when he told the police that the “...‘heretical’ papers found in his room belonged to Marlowe, who was subsequently arrested.” (History Editors). Christopher was released from jail, he was out on bail. He made his way to an Inn that was located outside of Deptford, outside of London. After about a day had passed, Ingram Frizer stabbed Marlowe in the eye with a dagger. Ingram was tried for murder and he claimed that the killing was purely self-defense. According to the New York Times’ account of the story, ‘Marlowe attacked Ingram in a fitful rage.’ Ingram was let go, and that was the end of that case. In Park Honan’s book Christopher Marlowe: Poet and Spy It is speculated that Christopher Marlowe was indeed a spy, and would often work for Queen Elizabeth. Upon reading PBS Frontline’s Marlowe: What Little We Know, I discovered the following: “It is strongly suggested that this reflects his entry into government service: that he was recruited in early 1585, and that the subsequent absences were missions of some sort, missions which added both to his ill-fame at Cambridge and to his favour with the Privy
