Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, bring attention to many factors in the Colombian culture that relate to multiple themes. One of the most prominent themes in the novel would be collective responsibility. As a person reads the novel they would notice how collective responsibility ties in with the many different aspects of Colombian culture and helps the other themes to show this along. Gabriel connects these different themes seamlessly to the point where they are hard to pick out. However, as mentioned before as the most prominent theme, collective responsibility was the most distinguishable. Gabriel seamlessly blends this into the novel throughout it, with the people knowing about the plan to murder Santiago and not doing anything. However, the real question is “To what extent does the author’s use of Colombian use of Colombian culture influence the theme of collective responsibility? “. Three parts of Colombian culture, honor killing, social class, and family all help influence the theme.

Firstly, one part of Colombian culture that influences the theme is honor killing. Although, honor killing is not specifically mentioned in the novel the reader can infer that it is a part of the culture with the plot to kill Santiago. As the reader reads the novel he or she is first introduced to the world of Chronicle of a Death Foretold by the way of Santiago’s murder.
