In A Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez a Colombian town is being investigated 27 years after a brutal murder over the dispute of gender roles in the community. The women in this story seem to have their ducks in a row and understand the scenarios of this story and each woman that will be explained have their own perspective and opinion on how women should be treated compared to men, while experiencing everything firsthand. Furthermore, Marquez’ portrayal of women's awareness through the characterization of Pura Vicario, Angela Vicario, and Clotilde Armenta distinguish the gender roles displayed in Latin American culture.

At this point in the novel we realize the only people that are doing anything or notice anything about the impending murder were women, Clotilde was so aware of the situation that she stepped out of her role as a wife and made sure her husband knew about the twins. When describing her actions the narrator uses the words “good reason” (38) to show us what she did would be considered good but not in her role in society. Clotilde even steps even more above and beyond when she “grabbed Pedro Vicario by the shirt and shouted to Santiago Nasar to run” (68). Now Clotilde as not only spoke up but put in action to try and derail the plans of the twins and stop this outrageous cycle of machismo. We experience more of Clotildes frustration when she goes to the mayor to try and get him to stop the boys but she “suffered another disappointment with the mayors casual attitude” (34).
