A.S Patric’s use of diction conveys his feelings as being almost culpable for killing off the snake, but he tries to make it seem like the man was obligated to kill it. The scene where the man says, “My first instinct was to let him go this way and I would go mine”, shows that he wasn’t violent by nature. The man describes afterward that he had to look out for the other people and animals that might be harmed by this venomous creature. The effects that this passage can have on a reader is one where they may feel pity for the naive snake and the ‘violent’ man. The use of the word, hacking, seems to indicate that the man was mercilessly trying to attack the creature.
How Rock and Roll Has Been Affected and Evolved Through the Ages Larry Williams, the blues and rock and roll singer, once said, “Rock and Roll has no beginning and no end for it is the very pulse of life itself.” With this quote, he shows that rock and roll truly is an ever-changing enigma. Its lifespan is similar to that of a human’s life because it has consisted of many phases like rockabilly, doowop, and many others. It has had its ups and its downs with the appearance of young new talent that inspired people around the world, and the death of superstars has ripped fans apart as long as this historical music genre has existed.
In a time where sampling is a staple of hip-hop and other predominant, modern genres, it is not unreasonable for an artist to take ownership of past artifacts, even those which once were oppressed or used for oppression, as a way to reclaim the artifact itself, to subvert it, or otherwise reconstitute meaning. When we examine remixing and sampling in pop music in an academic way, we must consider how it is consumed by and therefore affects a non-academic audience. Understanding the audience is foundational to communication, after all. Radio listeners will not necessarily know where sampled pieces originate from, let alone their original contexts. And those effects should be further examined in the future.
The reading I will focus on this week is an article written by the journalist Kays Gary for the Charlotte Observer in June 1956. In the reading, Gary recalls his time spent with Elvis Presley during an interview with the local press before an early performance in North Carolina. Although Elvis was evidently being very flirtatious and open with his young female fans on the afternoon of the interview, his attitude towards the media is notably more hostile, with the singer remarking that “them critics don’t like to see nobody win doing any kind of music they don’t know nothin’ about” (p. 19). This bitter response to the criticism faced by Presley after his appearance on the Milton Bearle Show appears to indicate that Elvis believed rock and roll to have a high cultural value that made it inaccessible and unintelligible to certain groups of people (in this specific instance, journalists). However, when asked why he does what he does, Presley retorts with the disappointingly honest line that he performs for the money and would be willing to abandon rock and roll should a new style become more lucrative (p. 20).
In one of her songs, “Sissy Blues”, she uses a slightly insinuating tone to describe a love triangle between herself, a man, and a man who dresses like a woman called ‘Miss Kate’, described as ‘a sissy’. The music is almost frantic and sharp, following the insinuating tone of Ma’s voice. The tale she spins is of her losing her man to someone she did not expect: a man dressed in drag, ‘Miss Kate’, with a ‘jelly roll’ (euphemism for male genitals) who flaunts himself. According to Sandra Lieb, “…”freak shows” and drag shows-evenings set aside for homosexuals, lesbians, and transvestites-were common in many Harlem and Chicago night clubs” (Lieb 123), which testifies for the reasoning and inclusion of this character in “Sissy Blues”. It is a song about sexual jealousy, a common theme in many songs, but Ma Rainey places a twist on it when her man is in love with a ‘sissy’.
Australian “Earcher”, Deposit, stated that, ‘Earchers were emulating their favourite rappers by shoplifting the brands they’d see in in hip hop magazines imported to the US’ (Fazal, 2020). This implies that many Australian “Earchers” were encapsulated by the style and appearance of musical artists in the United States, and perceived these artists as a suitable role model to follow. The obsession with imitating American music artists also allowed Australian “Earchers” to experience a sense of community and belonging. The “Earcher”, Deposit, specified that, ‘Rap kept me going as a kid…I’d lock myself in my room and bump the early Eminem albums which made me feel like I wasn’t alone’ (Fazal, 2020). Rock N’ Roll was a new music genre accepted and loved by many teenagers of the time. While their parents felt that Elvis Presley ruined music, the teens disagreed, and with so many teenagers at the time, there were many to keep the genre alive. Teens wanted to release the tensions that bubbled beneath the smooth surface of postwar America. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.” A generation which was earnestly devoted to peace, protest, and revolution, the counterculture amongst the 1960’s yearned for change. Rock and roll was far beyond just a genre of music; it influenced lifestyles, protests, and attitudes, thus, kindling an awakening in the youth of American culture. The distinction between parental and youth culture was a persistent root of concern, considering that teens throughout the world found a sense of belonging in this style of music.
Rock music in the 1960s was egalitarian, eclectic, and real based on a number of reasons. To explain the 'real' piece of rock music in the 1960s, one would have to know that there was war going on overseas that didn't make sense to Americans as to why it was going on (the Vietnam war). There was also still severe inequality between blacks and whites causing protests to occur via the Civil Rights movement, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There was inequality between women and mens rights. These issues caused dissatisfaction to occur in the American people.
Rap music has negative influences on teenagers and youth lives, as they are drawn to the lifestyle of drugs, sex, and violence, which is contained in the music lyrics and videos. Research has supported this, arguing that exposure for a long time to this music is likely to affect the overall mood, behavior, perceptions, and create fantasies among the youths (Miranda and Claes, 2004). This has had significant influences on their behaviors at school and at home. Parents are concerned, since they are unaware of the lyrics, as the teenagers prefer to download the songs and listen the music through the headphones.
