8. What do we learn about Little Chuck Little in chapter 3 of the novel? Is he a “flat” or a “round” character? Why? We learn Little Chuck Little is also someone who is from a very poor family, but he is a true gentleman. He is said to be a gentleman on page 26, lines 7-8 when the narrator says “But he[Little Chuck Little] was born a gentleman. He put his hand under her [Ms.Caroline] elbow and led Miss Caroline to the front of the room.” He is also shown to be a gentleman on page 26 lines 18-19, “Miss Caroline watched the process in horrid fascination. Little Chuck brought water in a paper cup, and she drank it gratefully.” In conclusion these quotations from the novel show how mannered and mature Little Chuck is. In Chapter 7, the children discover more treasures including a ball of gray twine, two soap carvings, a tarnished medal, and a watch on a chain. What indications does Jem give that he knows where the “treasures” are coming from? How does he react to Mr.Nathan Radley filling the knot-hole with cement? He gives and indication that he knows where the items are coming from through the context when they begin writing a letter to whomever is leaving the objects in the tree. He says “He had been on the verge of telling me something all evening; his face would brighten and he would lean towards me, and then he would change his mind. He changed it again . “Oh,nothin’.” “Here, let’s write a letter.” I pushed a tablet and pencil under his nose.”Okay. Dear Mister….”(Page 61, lines 27-33) In these lines from the novel when scout says Jem wanted to say something really badly but wouldn’t, Jem was trying to say that he thinks it was Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley who was leaving the items. Jem reacts very questionative towards Mr.Radley when he says that the tree was dying and that was why he filled its trunk up with cement. He knows Mr.Radley is lying and he even asks his father Atticus if the tree was dying, to which he said this (Page 63, lines 5-6) “Why no, son. I don’t think so. Look at the leaves, they’re all green and full, no brown patches anywhere………(Page 63 Lines 17-20) He stood there until nightfall, and I waited for him. When we went in the house I saw he had been crying; his face was dirty in the right places, but I thought it odd that I had not heard him.” These few lines from the context shows that Jem knows Mr.Radley is lying, and that was his only connection to Arthur, but now they no longer even have
