Did you know that Annie Cannon was able to classify around a thousand stars a day during the peak of her career? This paper will be focusing on the life, career, and legacy of Annie Jump Cannon. Annie Jump Cannon was hired by Edward Pickering, and she worked as “Pickering’s assistant at the Harvard College Observatory” (1). After that, she was credited with coming up with an easy system that divided the stars into seven spectral classes. The spectral classes were as follows: O, B, A, F, G, K, M. Annie Jump Cannon’s career ended after forty years, but her work paved the way for women in the scientific community and continues to inspire fellow female scientists.
Hugh Glass was no ordinary man; he was very tough and determined. He is also considered top 10 most badass people in the world. Hugh was born in Pennsylvania around the year of 1783. “I had orders to report to Brigadier General Lindsey, and he said to me, Well , York, I hear you have captured the whole damned German army. And I told him I only had 132.” ~ Alvin C. York. This quote shows how brave Alvin C. York was and how he became a hero.
Following his graduation in 1936, he went on to commission as an officer in the Army Air Corps, but when he applied for flight school he was rejected due to the color of his skin. At that time, the Army Air Corps believed that blacks lacked the intelligence and mental courage to succeed as fighter pilots. Many would’ve
Charles Yeager, known as Chuck Yeager, is a spectacular pilot that lived during that period. He grew up in West Virginia. Chuck lived a normal life up until after high school when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was an excellent pilot. The Yeagers P-51 Mustang was once shot down, and he avoided getting captured and went to Spain.
At the beginning of the war, many accidents were due to mechanical problems with planes, bad weather and errors in navigation. Louie called the B-24 that they flew on a “Flying Coffin.” “Flying the B-24, one of the world’s heaviest planes, was like wrestling a bear” (Hillenbrand 55). On Thursday, May 27, 1943, Louie, his friend Phil and Cuppernill were headed to Honolulu for their day off. Before they left, a lieutenant flagged them down and told them there were going a mission to search for a missing pilot.
He was assigned as a second lieutenant and a Bombardier on the B-24 liberator bomber later named “The superman” by Louie and his crewmates. In April of 1943, during a bombing mission against the Japanese-held island of Nauru, “The superman” was badly damaged. No longer able to fly, “the Superman” was decommissioned and able bodied crew members were sent to Hawaii for reassignment. Louie and some of his crew mates were assigned to another B-24 nicknamed “The Green Hornet” and was notorious amongst the other pilots as a “lemon” and
Bill Haley is often credited with creating the first rock and roll song to hit #1 on the pop charts with his song, “Rock Around the Clock”. While this was the first song to hit the top of the charts, many people consider “Rocket ‘88” by Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm to be the first rock and roll record ever produced. Other trailblazers of the genre include Elvis Presley, who many people threatened to censor and take his music off the radio. Despite this, he still managed to become extremely successful and is often times referred to as the “king of rock and roll”. Chuck Berry is another famous pioneer of rock and roll music.
(2) During the war he was tasked in creating a new weapon and by almost the end of the war he had completed the Vengeance Weapon 2 or better known as the V2 rocket. The V2 rocket was the first long distance ballistic missile and it was also the first object to reach the boundary of space. After the war ended he and his group surrendered without a fight and forfeited all his research and plans on the V2 rocket. The US was intrigued by his research and the V2 rocket that when Operation Paperclip was set into motion he was one of the first to be brought over. Once he was here in the US he was tasked this time to send a satellite into orbit before the
This quote describes the result of the first rocket. As it is clearly states that the rocket was a fail. The design and construction of the rocket did not succeed. The author shows sarcasm in Roy Lee´s dialogue, which shows that they weren´t happy with the outcome. Quentin is taking note of what happened this round, most likley so that they can build something better on their next try.
Ray Bradbury (August 22, 1920 – June 5, 2012) was an American fantasy, science fiction, horror and mystery fiction author. In his works Bradbury brought up various problems, concerning scientific progress as well as personal interaction in modern society. One of these problems is relationship between children and adults. In a short story “The Rocket” the writer depicts trusting and caring relationship between Fiorello Bodoni, a poor junkyard owner, who spends his nights admiring nearby rocket launches bound for the Moon, Venus and Mars, and his family.
Perhaps the most famous equation ever produced by the renowned theoretical physicist Albert Einstein was his theory of special relativity, written as E=mc2. This sequence of letters and numbers is, for the most part, common knowledge. But how many people actually know what E =mc2 means, or how it has shaped our understanding of the universe? What has he done for the ever-expanding field of science?
Brian from the book “Hatchet” and Max from the book “Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment” are alike and different in many ways. First of all, let us talk about the differences between these two heroes. Max is a girl who has a passion in helping people and cares about other other people even though they are strangers or not. On the other hand, Brian is surviving in the Canadian woods and he was just a survivor of an airplane crash. Max is a hero because in one part of the book, Max stopped what she was doing to help a girl who was about to get beaten up by 3 guys.
In Ray Bradbury’s short story, “The Flying Machine”, Bradbury explores the drawbacks and the ricks of inventing a new technology. With the full depiction of two main characters, the flier and the Emperor, the audience can clearly understand they have quite different characterizations. When the servant called the flier to come down, he “came proudly to the Emperor” (Bradbury 2) that shows he is a confident and naïve person who doesn’t consider his following consequence at all. By contrast, the Emperor has a careful, calm and even cold personality. While the flying man soared down the morning wind, he “glanced in all direction” (Bradbury 2) to observe whether there are other people who see the flier.
