Adylyn McWilliams October 22, 2015 Church councils have guided the people of the catholic faith for thousands of years. If a modern day council were to meet, I think that the council should discuss having no opinion on abortion, the Church should be completely against capital punishment, and the Church should let women become priest. If this council were to meet, it would meet in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The council should spread its decisions by using the media. One topic that I think that a modern day council should discuss is abortion. The Church teaches that there is life from the moment of conception, and sees abortion as a termination of life. The Church teaches that capital punishment is okay in “grave circumstances.” I think that the Church should be completely against capital punishment. One reason is, you never really know if someone is guilty, so you could be killing an innocent person which is murder. Since 1976, in the United States one thousand people have been put to death that have been possibly innocent. For example, Lester Bower. Bower was executed June 3, 2015. He was convicted of the murder of four men. He denied the involvement in the killings. After Bower’s execution a woman stepped forward saying that her boyfriend had killed the men after a drug deal that went wrong (deathpenaltyinfo.org). Seeing that the courts can so easily convict the wrong person the Church should be against capital punishment. Also, the sixth commandment states, “Thou shalt not kill.” Even if this is a punishment for a horrible crime it is still not ok to kill someone. The Church teaches you that you should repent for your sins, and ask for forgiveness. If you kill, someone and are put to death you don’t have time to reflect on what you have done, and feel sorry for
