In this world, unfortunately, many individuals often face discrimination and unfairness, or other forms of evil performed by many others. This real world theme, evil, is also evidently portrayed in the novel, Cinder, by Marissa Meyer, through the step-mother's interactions with her step-daughter, Cinder, the manipulation and controlling of citizens on Luna and the Commonwealth by the queen, and the discrimination of certain races of individuals throughout the novel, depicted by several characters in the story. For instance, Cinder was often treated very unfairly in the interactions with her mother. Thus, Adri's actions often make Cinder feel like she wants to leave her abusive and discouraging hometown and escape to Europe, justifying that Adri exposes evilness several times in the story. Moreover, the empress of Luna reveals her own sense of evil when she comes to make an offer with the Commonwealth. In one event of the story, many citizens of the Commonwealth stand outside of the palace, expressing their hatred to the queen, outside of the palace. However, when the queen steps out and smiles at the citizens, she manipulates their minds into believing that she is the best person in the world and that she must be their new empress. Consequently, the Lunar queen controls the innocent minds of several citizens of the Commonwealth, taking advantage of her superior abilities and revealing evilness through this act. In addition to the unjust actions of Adri and the empress of Luna, many instances of discrimination are also expressed throughout the story.
