The smallest things often have the biggest impact. For example, people’s success depends on their attitude. If people believe they are doomed, they probably are. On the other hand, if people remain positive and hopeful, their chances of success are much higher. This mindset is helpful to people enduring horrible acts of inhumanity.
Success reinforces heroic values because it builds one’s confidence in themselves. This is supported in The Odyssey, after Odysseus and his crew faced many trials, including one where Odysseus successfully got them out of a near death situation with the cyclops, Polyphemus, they had to face another one with Scylla and Charybdis. Before facing these two monsters, Odysseus inspired his crew by declaring, “When Cyclops penned us up in his vaulted cave... my courage, my presence of mind and tactics saved us all and we will live to remember this one day… up now, follow my orders,/ all of us work as one!” (Homer, 12. 228-231).
“There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time,” Malcolm X, and activist overcame adversity by learning from his defeat. Adversity affects our world today too. With our harsh rules and drive to be better, one must strive to succeed and overcome the hardships. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, some challenges are truly impossible to overcome. Nonetheless, one cannot stop believing in himself/herself, and not lose any hope, because most times those values can help an individual overcome any
“How to Get the Most Out of Yourself" by Alan Loy McGinnis a psychologist is about finding the key to success. The idea is that success is nothing more than having self-confidence. Whenever we face failures or bad luck we end up putting ourselves down which makes it seem impossible for us to ever be successful. McGinnis advices that we should keep our chin high and improve on our failures instead of letting them bring us down. McGinnis states that we should focus on our abilities and not on our weak ones.
The adversity might stink, but a positive attitude can bring you a long way. Keeping a positive attitude is mentioned in Randy Pausch’s speech. “...hands now if I'm not morose enough for you I'm sorry to disappoint but I don't choose to be an object of pity... ”(Pausch).
Amy Tan is one of the most famous multicultural authors in the world to this day. The Joy Luck Club, one of her most popular books, is highly influenced by her life. This book is about four Chinese women and the loss of culture transferred from them to their daughters. The book takes place in San Francisco and partially in China where the main character goes to find her half sisters. Just like the daughters in the book, Amy Tan has lost a lot of Chinese culture from her parents, who were born in China, to her and her brothers.
I have chosen to take any negative experiences as future motivation to succeed. This has helped me to better appreciate not only the joy of winning, but also the hard work and devotion that goes into it. By doing this I am able to make more confident choices, accept the ideas of others, and inspire my peers to see the important opportunities that coincide with "failure" as well. Every day we are affected by actions, both our own and by those of others. It is how a person chooses to react to these actions (whether they are considered to be a success or failure) that reveals and shapes true
When times get tough and adversity is thrown at you like a curveball all you can do is stay positive and know to never give up. Unfortunately I have had to deal with a couple scenarios where I have been faced with adversity. I have had to overcome my parents being divorced, and a family member who has overcame a drug addiction. That was one of the hardest things I was ever faced with going through middle school, but knowing that there will always be a tomorrow and to not give up on someone has had a positive impact in the end. It has brought my family closer than we have ever been.
Researchers from the Mayo Clinic have found that positivity can help lower levels of stress and depression, and help with coping skills for the individual (“How to Stop Negative Self-Talk.”). Staying positive during times of conflict is not just a way to pass the time, as it also has health benefits that can help lead people through hard times. Even without knowing it, some of these famous figures or even normal people today may stay positive in tough times because they feel better without even knowing the true effects. The Mayo Clinic staff also say, “Indeed, some studies show that personality traits such as optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your health and well-being. Similar to adversity, success is much easier to manage with the support of a team. Individual success can lead a person to be conceited, but teammates serve as a barrier to help you walk the line between confidence and arrogance. Learning how to be confident in yourself without crossing the line into arrogance is a tremendously large part of learning to deal with success. Athletics have also taught me that satisfaction can lead to complacency and complacency leads to failure. I have learned how to celebrate a success while recognizing and remaining critical of my own mistakes.

In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens tells the story in the perspective of a young boy growing up in England during the Victorian Era. Philip “Pip” Pirrip is the protagonist, where we discover his life experiences and expectations through his narration. Pip’s sister, Mrs. Joe, and her husband, Mr. Joe, greatly influence his childhood. He meets many people later on who teaches him that not everyone will be happy and what it really means to have “great expectations”. Through Pip’s journey, Dickens suggests that happiness becomes achievable if one learns to accept and fix their flaws.
According to the Nurses ' Health Study detailed by the Harvard Gazette, optimism and positive thinking can have healing benefits against the diseases analyzed in the aforementioned study. In the study, the top quartile of women with high optimism had almost a thirty percent lower risk of passing away due to the studied diseases compared to the most pessimistic women. Nowadays, positivity has become, in the eyes of many, a sign of arrogance. If someone hears another person feel good about a difficult test they have just taken or after a tough choice they have just made, many will tend to associate the other 's positivity with straight-up arrogance, due to their feeling of inferiority. Although humbleness is a very important characteristic for
