Cinematic Arts Personal Statement I encountered my first experience with death at the age of nine. My friend and I found a dead goldfish near the water trough where we used to wash our dishes. Someone left the goldfish in a plastic bottle, dead and lonely. The smooth, red scale glittered under the sun, along with the upturned white belly. How did she die? What has happened to her in this life? Who left her here? With thousands of questions filled with our minds, we decided not to leave her alone here. We decided to hold a funeral for this pitiful little creature. We buried her in our schoolyard, with a “tombstone” made with a tree branch that says her name, “fish”. The idea of exploring the outside world was fascinating to me, so I came all the way to U.S from a small city in China. During this journey, I have met so many people who have given me a new perspective to look at the world, who stroke my heart with their experience and characteristics, who have become inspirations in my stories.
