Throughout the years, film makers used various techniques to express their movie style. Genres in the film industry can range as far as a comedic cartoon to a dramatic tale. These motion pictures are able to captivate the audience through many cinematic techniques, such as camera angles, lighting, and more. One popular director in the film industry is Tim Burton, known for his eerie stop motions and mystical movies. Burton utilizes a variety of elements to make his childlike innocent, dark films pop.
Tim Burton’s near gothic style displays characterization to challenge society’s values and stereotypes. Edward Scissorhands, the main protagonist from Edward Scissorhands, is perceived as gothic because of his pale skin, having weapons for hands, and wearing all black. But, Edward actually turns out to be friendly by creating beautiful plant sculptures with his scissors instead of using them for harm. Normally, people who look alarming are automatically judged as evil by first glance. Burton changes this stereotype through Edward and conveys the moral, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. In one of the scenes of Alice in Wonderland, the audience is showed the Knave of Hearts rearing on his black horse holding a sword while his army surrounds him in a background of fire. He is known as the Queen of Heart’s main protector and is attacking the White Queen in order to gain the throne. The burning background and the fighting reveal an evil and gruesome character. In addition, the factory from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also displays something hidden. The camera zooms out and the factory casts a dark shadow on the bright snow. The factory was created by legendary candy maker, Willy Wonka, who offered a reward of touring the factory to the five kids who found a golden ticket in the chocolate bars.
