Cinnamaldehyde Lab Report

The diagram above represents what was discovered during the experiment. There are two spots, “Cinn.” meaning Cinnamaldehyde and Product referencing either (E,E)-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene or (E,Z)-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene. The blurring between the two spots for the crude product indicated that they were not pure and could have still had starting material leftover. There are two R_f values because from the UV analysis there was slight separation between the two spots, but they were still blurred together. This could indicate that there was still some starting material leftover, and therefore the possible products were not distinguishable. Final Mass=(Mass of Watch Glass+Product)-Mass of Watch Glass Final mass=33.645 g-33.428 g=0.217 grams of product [Eq. 3] …show more content…

Percent Yield Since 1.0 mmol of both the ylide and cinnamaldehyde were mixed, and the reaction occurs in a 1:1 ratio, theoretically 1.0 mmol of 1,4-Diphenyl-1,3-butadiene would form. Theoretical Yield: 1.0 mmol Cinnamaldehyde x (1 mol cinnamaldehyde)/(1000 mmol cinnamaldehyde) x (1 mol product)/(1 mol cinnamaldehyde) x (206.28 g)/(mol product)= 0.206 grams 1,4-Diphenyl-1,3-butadiene % Yield= (Actual Yield)/(Theoretical Yield) x 100= (0.217 g)/(0.206 ) x 100=105.3 %yield
