I then returned to Detox to attempt to move Ellery back in Cell Block 1. She flat out said she wasn’t going to stop with her antagonizing of inmates Knight and Robertson and was going to rip inmate Tadajewski off of “her” bottom bunk. Ellery then stated “you might as well get my stuff and I will stay in holding the remainder of my stay.” I then asked Ellery one final time, if she was sure of her decision and advised her that there will be consequences for her actions.
On April 21st, 1930, Ohio State Penitentiary, which was built in Ohio’s capital, Columbus, in 1834, caught fire and killed hundreds of inmates. When returning for the night, they discovered that a fire was started within cell blocks G and H. It was only after the fire had been doused, that everyone had realized that the scaffolding, on the outside walls of those cell blocks, was what had caught fire. At the time, the prison was known for its poor conditions. The prison was only meant to hold 1,500 people, but at the time of the fire, it was housing 4,300 inmates. This disaster goes down in history as the worst fire at any prison in the United States.
The historical monograph, City of Inmates, by Dr. Kelly Lytle Hernández, let’s us dive into the beginnings of Los Angeles and lets us discover on how the city transformed into what is now the capital of incarceration in the United States. Hernandez criticizes how instead of prisons being utilized as tools to keep society save from criminals, they have also been instances of it being used to keep middle to high class white American ideals safe from the poor working class, implying how even though one of Los Angeles first accomplishments was to eliminate the spanish casta system, it never truly got rid of the casta system since there is still a force continuing to enforce the social hierarchy, but modified throughout the years to racially target

Throughout the history, when states were at war with each other, many soldiers were captured by the opposite side and put into war prisons. The captured soldiers were unable to grasp how their freedom was suddenly snatched away from them in the process of serving their country, and resulted in them becoming prisoners of war. During the bloody battles of the Civil War, numerous Union and Confederate soldiers were captured by the opposite sides and became prisoners of war. Approximately 194,000 Union soldiers were captured by the Confederacy, out of which 30,000 died during captivity. The ones who somehow managed to stay alive in the dreaded conditions of the Southern prisons suffered from lack of food and medical care.
I refer to an application I made to HMP Parc for the post of Prison Custody Officer. I have been told I have not progressed as I have failed the above enhanced Level 1 security vetting. The purpose of this letter is to appeal against this decision. I have passed every stage of the interviewing process for the HMP Parc post; including an interview with the Prison Director and have now had the devastating news that I have failed the security vetting. I have previously applied for several suitable and similar posts following completion of my university degree in the hope of starting my career and this post is the first interview I was invited to.

History South Carolina South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) was developed in 1866 because the South Carolina General Assembly detected awful conditions that existed in the county jails. With the help of the general assembly, inhumane treatments of inmates were put to an end, and public hanging ended in 1878. Before the 1900’s inmates were forced to take baths in tub where the water could not have been changed until all of them were finished. Until 1937, women were still being housed in the same facilities as men. SCDC chose to use their inmates to help maintain good road conditions; if a county chose not to do so inmates would be transferred to the state.
One of the issues that we kind of talked about during class was segregation. Through my notes for King Birmingham, it is known that the city Birmingham was the most segregated cities in the United States. I asked people why they thought about this city in Alabama and why was it so segregated. A lot of my response was how the old history was a different level of racist. One of my colleagues said how the old times was more racist than it is today.

The US faces a very big and real problem that affects mainly repeat criminal offenders. Bail, which is a sum of money paid to a court to guarantee an appearance in court is very often set too high and does not consider current financial circumstances to the fullest. Infact, in New York City alone, one in ten defendants are unable to pay for bail at their arraignment (nytimes). Kenneth Humphrey, a retired 64 year old who had prior substance abuse and multiple felonies, followed a disabled man into his home and threatened him and demanded money, of which he got five dollars and a bottle of cologne (nytimes). His bail was set at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and being a retired shipyard worker, his retirement could not pay out.

For some people who are serving a life sentence, being in prison is too much to handle. In January two inmates, David Sweat and Richard Matt, began planning their great prison escape.
