Disobedience is the failure to obey rules or someone in authority. As many people are taught when they are children disobedience is bad. This is correct most of the time when talking about listening to your parents or teachers etc. However, disobedience to authority or rules is sometimes the best option when trying to cause change. Disobedience is valuable for human progress because it has a strong impact on society by bringing awareness to unjust laws and rulings and it has been proven in history to cause change. Disobedience has a strong impact on society because of how it brings awareness to unjust laws and rulings. An amazing example of this is the Sip-In 1966. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. changed history through his disobedience while advocating for the rights of African Americans. A quote from Find Law says, “King used civil disobedience as a means of effectuating government change. It took the form of large-scale, non-violent refusal to obey government commands.” This shows his disobedience was to change the unjust rules of society. He executed this through his non-violent refusals. Martin Luther King Jr. led a movement that fought for African Americans and their access to civil and voting rights in America. During the time of his movement, African Americans were being denied civil and voting rights. His disobedience toward the government and how they treated African Americans and limited their freedom led to African Americans gaining their voting rights as well as their civil rights. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in."
