Robin Hood is a character we all know and remember from our childhood. He was the subject of children’s movies and books and remains so until even today. We idolized him and pretended we were and archer just like Robin himself, for we loved the concept of “stealing from the rich to give to the poor”. While Robin Hood was a hero, he was also a criminal. He broke the law, and we cheered him on while doing it. The tale of Robin Hood is an interesting one, but whenever the fairy-tales become reality where do we really draw the line? Civil Disobedience on one hand can benefit other citizens, but on another can stir up riots if done the wrong way. What exactly defines a peaceful civil disobedience? America declared its independence on July 4, 1776. While that was when it was declared, many would argue that the true declaration of independence happened years earlier. On December 16, 1776, many colonists disguised themselves as native Americans and raided British ships in the Boston Harbor. They dumped the tea into the water as a retaliation for the taxation that was brought upon them, this has since been known as the Boston Tea Party. This movement inspired many colonists to join the revolutionary cause which sowed the seeds for independence. Was this movement peaceful? I would argue yes. While they did destroy British property, they did it without violence or bloodshed. Technically It was not British property since the British were going to force the tea on the colonies for taxing purposes. Her name is Rosa Parks. She was a remarkable lady who broke the law just by sitting in a seat and refusing to get up. That act of civil disobedience is what many scholars have concluded to be the act that started the civil rights movement and broke the ground for the development for the road to equality. Civil disobedience still continues today. As recently as two years ago, a lady by the name of Bree Newsome climbed a flagpole to remove the confederate flag from South Carolina capitol grounds. She believed the flag to be a sign of racism and anti-American. Her actions then sparked a movement in America about the issue of the Confederate flag. Because of her actions, the flag no longer flies on South Carolina government grounds. She was arrested, but at the end of the day her actions more than benefitted society and
