Civil rights are the basic rights of the citizens to be free from unequal treatment based on certain characteristics such as gender and race, in settings such as employment, education, housing, and access to public facilities. A civil rights violation happens in designated situations where an individual is discriminated against on the basis of a protected characteristic. Most civil rights laws are made through the federal government through federal legislation or case law.
Civil liberties are the basic rights and freedoms that are certain either clearly identified in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, or interpreted or directed through the years by legislatures or the courts. Civil liberties include freedom of speech, action, privacy, the right to marry, the right to vote, etc.
Civil rights and civil liberties are similar because they are both related to rights and freedom of the citizens but the difference between them is that Civil rights refer to equal treatment of an individual irrespective of age, gender, or race. On the other hand, civil liberties are wide-ranging rights guaranteed in the Constitution. Civil rights refer to the concept of how an individual is treated by others.
